Over more than a century, Adelaide Cricket Club has produced and been home to a bevy of tremendous players who have produced remarkable careers. Many of those from recent decades have retired with playing careers that appear a very fair match for some of the greats of Adelaide's earlier eras.
The tremendous career of Ron M Sharpe from 1927-47 produced a staggering 587 wickets at 20.39, and yet he was somehow unable to gain a spot in a South Australian team laden with the world's best spinners at the time. Ron, meanwhile, starred similarly in Australian baseball, becoming one of the giants of the game and a member of baseball's Hall of Fame.
Whilst it seems inconceivable that anyone could top Ron Sharpe's record, there have been a couple of recent Adelaide Cricket Club stars who have retired from the game not far behind the batting record of the wonderful Cec Starr. Cec, who has held our top batting position for over 60 years, made 7,685 A-Grade runs in a stellar career spanning from 1927-50.
